Durgapur Municipal Corporation

City Center, Durgapur, West Bengal 713216

From Mayor's Desk

It is literally true that Durgapur Municipal Corporation has been stepping in with its full of youth. Gradually almost eighteen years have gone to renounced of its previous name Durgapur Notified Area Authority (DNAA). Though, in 1962 once an auspicious moment DNAA was started its maiden journey in rented premises at Sadhudanga, Durgapur – 1. Today Durgapur Municipal Corporation is running in comprises 43 Wards and 5,66, 937 population (according to last census) with 154 Sq.Km. area. A multi functional and eventful activity has been started Shopping Mall & Complex like Junction Mall, Suhatta, Kanu Sidhu Indoor Stadium, Bhagat Singh Stadium etc.In this moment from the core of my heart, I express my gratitude to the whole citizen of Durgapur for their cordial and active co-operation. At the same time, I am sorry for delay in publishing the Administrative Reports.

Durgapur, an important industrial center achieved the status of multifunctional character having its inception as unifunctional center for industrial and also institutional activity. The various Institutes like Engineering Colleges, especially The National Institute of Technology, Management Colleges, Computer Education Centers, Govt. College and huge number of Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools have made Durgapur an educational hub.  The city also requires transportation for rapid development of the City for commercial and also better link with country Capital and State capital through railways and roadways and also emphasis a national importance and status of regional centre of the state.

One of the most modern medical facilities for the people of Durgapur has already been established naming I. Q. City Multi Specialty Hospital situated at Sovapur Bijra (north of Durgapur). In spite of the above medical facilities, we want better hospitals anda Govt. Medical Colleges in the Smart City, keeping in mind in respect of Durgapur, the words used by our beloved Hon’ble Ex-Chief Minister Late Dr. B. C. Roy as “Durgapur will be the future RURH of India”

The corporation had successfully prepared the DDP for 2008-09 to 2012-13 under the KUSP programme. With the introduction of JnNURM, the preparation of the City Development Plan(CDP) has become mandatory for sanction of the projects. City Development Plan has also been emphasized in the 12th Five Year Plan.

Durgapur Municipal Corporation has taken the initiative to prepare a “City Development Plan” as a perspective for the future development of the City.

We also desire for better services towards the people of near about whole Durgapur Sub-Division, the present number of Wards should be enhanced from 43 to at least 75 nos. of Wards including various Panchayets from Durgapur East to West (from Andal Aerocity Gate to Birudiha Lal Baba Ashram, Kanksa).

Durgapur Railway Station has already been declared by Central Govt. as one of the Model Station keeping in view to create a Railway Yard at Pinjrapole (in between Durgapur & Waria Railway Station) so that number of Trains or EMU Coaches to preserve number of Trains in the said yard to render better Railway Services towards East & West.

An Effluent Treatment Plant should also be created giving top most priority so that the City will be Pollution free. Number of By-products will come out from this Plant wherefrom more revenue may be earned.

It is also our mission for better communication in between Durgapur and Beliatore, Bankura (only 16 Km. ) through Railway from Durgapur Railway Station.

Town Service Buses for better communication (Public & Private Big Bus Services – Inter Town Bus Services) is also required to be introduced.

A Circular Railway at Durgapur was also the dream of Dr. B. C. Roy for connecting the urban areas with Durgapur City as a whole, which may also be introduced.

Last but not least, the Damodar River from Raniganj to Randiha should be excavated for preserving more water so that frequent water will be available for drinking, irrigation and industrial purposes otherwise Durgapur will dry one day.

Two Fly Overs from Bhiringi More to Prantika and from AESBY More to Durgapur Station Western Cabin Gate is badly needed to avoid rush who are going for marketing at Benachity and Durgapur Bazar and to avoid disruption of communication of Passersby.

Anchoring the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission we focus the development of economic and social infrastructure of urban poors, improvement of physical and environmental aspects, strengthening municipal governance and their financial budgeting systems and procedures. We also have focused on creation of structure for bringing in good governance including accountability, transparency. Planned land use distribution is our prime interest. Apart from the CDP, Slum Free City Plan of Action to make India slum free under RAY has been started in Durgapur especially for the urban poors. We have taken up Wood Industry Basti as the pilot project under this scheme and the DPR has been already submitted to Govt. of India.

The preparation of CDP is taking up plans and programmes to urge upon  for overall improvement of the Corporation area with infrastructure projects relating to water supply and sanitation, sewerage all over the City, solid waste management, street development, urban transport and redevelopment of old city areas with a view to upgrading infrastructure therein, shifting industrial and commercial establishments to conforming areas, etc. special emphasis on poverty mitigation programmes for the poor and poverty stricken marginalized group. In the corporation, we, therefore, want to take up various development programmes for the urban poors like self employment, vocational training, technical training etc. We also want to give most priority of projects through stakeholders’ consultation, encouraging local unemployed youths for taking part in different development programmes so that we can reach the fruits of development at the grass root level.

Very recently the most topical “Hundred Smart City” announced by our Hon’ble Prime Minister also includes Durgapur as one of the Smart City in West Bengal, keeping that in mind this CDP highlights a vision of an urban area that is ecologically friendly, technologically integrated, thoroughly planned with confidence on the use of information technology to improve efficiency. We strongly feel that a sound economic base can only help us in achieving all our desired goals. We, therefore, want computerization of various functions, introduction of GIS, better financial management, introduction accrual system of accounting, better transparency in plans and programmes and more active citizens, interface and interaction. At the same time we will try to create an enabling environment for revival of sick industries.

Also, our request is not to waste drinking water and appeal to the citizens to take active part for plantation. Because any how we want to save the environment. We hope that through various interactions and  so many interface programmes with elected representatives, social activists, citizens and various C.D.S. groups, newer ideas will come up and a consensus can be arrived for preparing a meaningful City Development Plan for the Corporation.

I, on behalf of the Citizen of Durgapur Industrial Belt, the dream city of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister, which is gradually developed to be declared as Smart City in future by the Govt. of India. In view of the aforesaid status of the City, I like to propose that for amusement and mental development of the children and to create a beautiful spot of Tourism and other amenities like ZOO, SWIMMING POOL, CHILDREN PARK etc. at a pollution free zone at Durgapur so that the children of this city will be encouraged on seeing the proposed Zoo & Swimming Pool etc. There are so many infrastructures to establish those various recreations already mentioned above.
